About TransUnion
TransUnion
began in 1968, as the parent holding company for Union Tank Car Company.
The next year, it acquired the Credit Bureau of Cook County, which
at that time was maintaining 3.6 million card files in 400 7-drawer
cabinets. Soon, it became the first company to replace hand entries
with tape-to-disk transfer, and began creating the systems for on-line
data storage and retrieval.
TransUnion slowly began acquiring individual credit bureaus and forming
partnerships with those that were not for sale. Thus, by 1988, TransUnion
had achieved full coverage in the United States - maintaining and
updating information on virtually every consumer in the country.
Throughout the 90's, TransUnion extended operations beyond the U.S.
and beyond the credit industry. The TransUnion real estate division
has the ability to originate and close home loans and offers access
to prospects to lenders across the country.
TransUnion acquired TrueCredit.com in 2002 and thus entered the direct-to-consumer
market.
In addition to providing credit reports and credit scores to both
businesses and consumers, the company does healthcare evaluations
and provides employment screens through its PEER (Pre-Employment Evaluation
Report) division.
TransUnion services are now available in 25 countries on 5 continents.
