Free Credit Score

Most of the time, you’ll pay to get a credit score.

If you go to the annualcreditreport.com site to get your annual free credit report, it will come without scores. Then you’ll be offered the opportunity to purchase your credit score from each of the three credit bureaus.

When you go to the bank to apply for a mortgage loan, one of the first fees you’ll pay is the fee to order your credit report with scores. Depending upon your lender this could be a minimal fee of just a few dollars, or it could be in the $40 range.

In some cases, such as when you apply to purchase a car on credit, the dealer will order your credit report with credit scores and tell you the results for free.

The easiest way to get free credit scores is by accepting a free trial offer for ongoing credit reports and credit monitoring.

Simply fill out the required information, enter your credit card number, and get your credit report with scores. Except for the score from Equifax, which will be your FICO score, these scores will be slightly different from the FICO scores your mortgage lender will access. They will be close enough to let you know if you need to do some work on cleaning up your credit.

If you do nothing, you will be enrolled in the service and pay a monthly fee. However, you do have the option of canceling the account within 30 days. In that case, your initial credit scores will have been free.
